11. FORGIVENESS IN QUR’AN AND BIBLE

Is there anyone who is not in need of forgiveness of his sin? The Qur’an has some 50 references to people seeking forgiveness from Allah. The Bible states categorically that “all men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Thus it does not come as a surprise that both the Qur’an (over 150) and the Bible have many verses referring to this topic. Let us compare some of them:

THE QUR’AN:

The Need

(Adam and Eve said 🙂 If Thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy mercy we shad certainly be Cost. (S.7:23)

Our Lord, forgive us our sins, blot out from us our iniquities, and take to thyself our souls in the company of the righteous. (S.3:193)

Hope for Forgiveness

We have believed in our Lord, may he forgive us our faults, and the magic to which Thou didst compel us. (S. 20:73)

Uncertainty of Forgiveness

“…and who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment” (S. 26:82)

“he forgiveth whom he pleases and pardons whom he pleases.” (S. 2:284)

Certain sins cannot be forgiven

“God forgiveth not the sin of joining other gods with him; but he forgiveth whom he pleases other sins than this.” (S. 4:116)

If thou ask seventy times for their forgiveness, God will not forgive them: because they have rejected God and his Apostle; and God guideth not those who are perversely rebellious.” (S. 9:80)

Those who reject God and hinder men from the Path of God, then die rejecting God, – Tod will not forgive them. (S. 47:34)

 

THE BIBLE:

The Joy of Forgiveness

Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. (Psalm 32:1)

Praise the Lord, 0 my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases. (Ps. 103:2+3)

Assurance of forgiveness

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1John 1:9)

The Conditions for Forgiveness

“…without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” (Hebr. 9:22)

“But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matth. 6:15)

The unforgivable sin

“And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.” (Luke 12:10)

Jesus forgives sin

“Jesus said to the paralytic: Son, your sins are forgiven.” (Mark 2:5)

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” (Eph. 1:7)
